| Quick-Base by Kevin Harris |
+------------------------------+
This program may be freely distributed to anyone
in the universe as long as all four files are included.
Hi There!
Quick-Base is a MailBase Management utility. That is, a utility
that allows you to define and maintain records of family, friends,
businesses etc. that you frequently (or seldom) correspond with
in some way or another.
It is a simple program, logically, that I did mainly to learn
more about Amiga Intuition IO. However, I figured that it could
possibly be of use to someone, so HERE IT IS!
Before you run the program, make SURE that the file QB.screen
is in the current directory. For example if QB is on a disk in
drive DF1: you should first CD DF1: before running. (provided
QB.screen is also on DF1:) If QB and QB.screen are in a sub-
directory, CD to that directory. If you are running under the
WORKBENCH just make sure QB and QB.screen are in the same dir.
After un-arcing, rename QB.inf to QB.info and QB.scr to QB.screen.
Instructions:
OPTIONS: Options are selected by moving the Mouse Pointer over the
option you wish to select and pressing the left button.
1: Add New Record
When selected, a window will open over the PAGE. (the PAGE is
the left half of the screen where the name, or field #1 of the
records will appear.) Just key in the fields in succession,
and the window will disappear. If you wish to leave a field
empty, just hit RETURN. Field #1 should be the NAME of the
person, business, or whatever. Field #2 should be the street
address. Field #3 is to be used (A) if field #2 isn't large enough
to hold all the Street information, as will probably be the case
with some records, especially business records. Or (B) for the
City-State-Zip. If (A) is the case, use Field #4 for the
City-State-Zip. If (B) is the case, leave Field #4 empty.
Field #5 is for the Phone Number. If you plan on printing a
Phone List it is a good idea to include the area-code in all of
the numbers. This will line everything up in the list and make
it look real pretty. NEVER LEAVE THE FIRST FIELD EMPTY!!! The
EDIT and DELETE routines check this and immediatly exit on an
empty string.
2: Edit / View
When selected, a window will again appear over the page. It will
include all the information pertaining to the selected record,
or if none are selected, the first record on the page. [ Records
are selected by simply moving the pointer over the name and
pressing the left button. The selected name will be highlited.
This must be done, of course, BEFORE any options are selected. ]
You may use this option to Edit the record, or just look at it.
To edit just move the pointer over the portion you want to change,
push the left button, and go to town. The normal editing functions
(Delete, Backspace, etc.) will be active. When finished editing a
line, hit RETURN or select another line. Select OK when finished.
3: Delete Record
When selected a window will appear including the name of the
selected record, and two brand new rolls of charmin tissue.
Select OK to delete the record, or No Way if you want to leave
it intact. The window will disappear, and the appropriate action
will be taken.
4: Search String
When selected a window will appear including two strange-looking
eyeballs. (If you wonder what I look like, just imagine my face
around these.) Key in the string you wish to look for. Only the
first field in each record following the selected record will be
searched. (sorry.) This will help you find a record if you have
a long list and dont feel like doing alot of scrolling. You may
continue-search by re-selecting this function and OK. Select
No Way if you don't want the search to be done. By the way, you
don't have to use the whole string. A portion large enough to
distinguish it from others is sufficient, and it can be any part
of the string you are looking for. (front, middle, whatever.)
5: Quit / Exit
Three guesses.
SCROLLING: Scrolling is selected by moving the Mouse Pointer over
one of the arrows to the right of the page and pressing
the left button.
1: Up
The large up arrow scrolls the file up one whole page ( 13
records ) provided a whole page follows the current page.
The small up arrow scrolls up one record provided one
record follows the current page.
2: Down
The large down arrow scrolls the file down one whole page
( 13 records ) provided a whole page precedes the current page.
The small down arrow scrolls down one record provided one
record precedes the current page.
3: Home
You may move to the beginning of a file by selecting on the
word PAGE.
PRINTER: Printer is selected by moving the Mouse Pointer over the
large printer to the right of the screen and pressing the
left button.
1: Print Records List
When Printer is selected, a window opens including six things.
These are: three format options, a PRINT option, a CANCEL option,
and a number. To print a list of all the records in a file,
select the left-most format option and then PRINT.
2: Print Mailing Labels
Select the record for which you want labels made. Select Printer.
Select the middle format option. Select the number and key in
the number of labels you want printed. Select PRINT. This works
with standard sized tractor-fed labels. With anything else you
will have to improvise.
3: Print Phone List
Select the right-most format option and then PRINT.
NOTE: Before using any print option make sure of three things-
A: You have a printer.
B: It is turned on and ready to go.
C: SYS:DEVS/printer.device is there.
ANOTHER NOTE: I did the print routine using the standard device and
the standard commands. It is hard, however, to test
a routine on different printers when you only have one.
Therefore, I cannot gaurantee that it will work properly
with yours. Even on my own (BMC BX-80) there is a quirk
because of which when printing a records list or a phone
list the first time after the p.dev loads the title is
non-expanded. I still haven't figured that one out, but
it probably has to do with the (non-standard @#$%)
printer itself.
STORAGE: Storage is selected by moving the pointer over one of the
three storage devices on the bottom-right of the screen
and pressing the left button.
1: Save
Select the string gadget at the top of the window and key in
the name you wish the file to have (including the path) and
hit RETURN. Then select save. If you have been working on an
existing file just select save, provided the proper name is
still visible at the top of the window. Files are automatically
sorted when saved.
2: Load
Use the scroll arrows to find the filename or directory desired.
Select the name or directory. Repeat this until the desired
path/name is visible at the top of the window. Select Load.
All entries followed by a / are directories.
NOTE: As is easily noticed, the STORAGE window is not that large.
If you go too deep on directories, use super-long file names or
do anything to make a storage string too long, ugly things will
happen. I suggest you only go one or two dirs deep and use
reasonably short file-names.
Quick-Base allows a maximum of 200 records per file.
I hope this does you some good.
If you have any questions or have found a bug (please report these)
my name / address / phone number can be found by selecting AUTHOR
in the menu bar. ENJOY YOUR AMIGA!
